How long is the iceberg season?

IIP tracks icebergs each year as long as they remain in the Trans Atlantic shipping lanes in the vicinity of the Grand Banks. This is defined as any icebergs south of 48 North latitude. The histogram below shows the considerable variability in the lenght of an iceberg season. The factors that affect season length are many and not fully understood but include Greenland climate variability, sea ice variability, and ocean current variability.

This is a color bar graph showing the variability of iceberg season lengths.
